How does LinkedIn Recruiter search work?

Recruiters don't scroll LinkedIn — they run keyword searches inside LinkedIn Recruiter and message the top matches. Here's how that search actually works and what decides whether your profile shows up.

Quick answer

LinkedIn Recruiter search works by keyword and filter, not by browsing. Recruiters type a job title plus skills and apply filters like location, years of experience and 'Open to Work,' then LinkedIn ranks matching profiles by keyword relevance. If your headline, About, skills and experience don't contain the exact terms a recruiter types, you don't appear in their results.

The search is keyword-first

LinkedIn Recruiter is a paid search tool. A recruiter enters a job title (say, 'UX Designer'), adds a few required skills ('Figma', 'user research'), and applies filters — location, current or past company, years of experience, and whether the candidate is open to work. LinkedIn then returns a ranked list of profiles that match, ordered largely by keyword relevance and completeness.

Your profile is indexed on the text it contains. The headline carries the most weight, followed by your About section, job titles, experience descriptions and skills. If the recruiter's search terms aren't present in those places, you're not in the result set at all — being qualified doesn't help if the keywords are missing.

What raises your ranking

Three things move you up: keyword match (do you contain the exact terms searched?), profile completeness (a filled-out profile ranks above a sparse one), and recency/activity signals. The biggest lever for most people is keyword match — specifically getting their target job title into the headline and repeating their core skills naturally across the profile.

Frequently asked questions

Do recruiters see everyone, or only certain profiles?

Recruiters using LinkedIn Recruiter can search the broad member base, but they only see the profiles their keyword search and filters return — and they rarely look past the first pages of results. Ranking near the top for the right terms is what gets you seen.

Does being 'Open to Work' help me get found?

Yes. Many recruiters filter specifically for candidates open to work, so turning on the setting adds you to those searches. You can limit the green banner to recruiters only if you'd rather your network not see it.

Why do unqualified-looking profiles rank above me?

Because they contain more of the exact keywords the recruiter searched. LinkedIn Recruiter ranks by relevance and completeness, not by who is 'better' — a keyword-optimized profile outranks a stronger but keyword-light one.
